Garage doors can be the most efficient, easy to use, and above all safest part of your home. However, in certain circumstances, garage doors can be very dangerous and even deadly. One of the dangers of garage doors is the spring at the top of your door. Garage doors can have anywhere from one to four springs. These springs have an immense amount of tension on them. This tension's purpose is to counter-balance the weight of the door making it seem lighter than it really is. This allows for easy operation by the homeowner or by the operator motor.
The tension on the spring is very important, and the door would not be able to operate to its full potential efficiency without them. The tension on the springs, however, can cause serious injury or death. When springs break there is a loud pop, similar to a gun shot. This is due to rust. If not properly attended to regularly, the spring will rust and break. Remember to oil your springs every three to six months!! The spring breaking will not damage your door overall, but if allowed to continue to operate without the spring, the door will breakdown even further. Be sure to stay clear of your other springs if one breaks. The strain the other springs will pick up due to the lack of one spring will cause the other springs to break in time. If you are near those springs if and when they break, it could cause major harm to you.
Although garage doors operate in a simple manner, there are several ways a garage door can break or become impaired. Everything that works upon the door from the springs to the rollers must work in perfect unison. You can help ensure your door lasts its best potential lifetime by following this tip.
Always make sure the door's opening is clear of any objects. Even if your door comes with photocells and an operator, these systems are just backups. Be sure to check to make sure the opening is clear every time you close it. Photo cells are not foolproof. Power surges, rodents chewing through the wire, etc. are not common but can affect the performance of the doors safety systems. This is why it is very important to always check before closing the door.
Another reason to always check the opening to is for the proper performance of the door. If the door closes on an object such as a bicycle or a yard tool, then the door will not close square and even. This will cause slack in the cable. The slack will allow the silver drum at the top of your door to throw the cable. Then a repair man will be needed to put the cable back on. DO NOT attempt this by yourself. You could cause major damage to you and your door.
Follow that simple tip and you will positively extend the life of your door! However, accidents do happen. If your door happens to throw a cable, call the experts here at Overhead Door Co. of Monroe. We can get you back up and running in no time!

Seamless gutter is one of the most important overlooked asset to your home's foundation health and value. Seamless rain gutter is invaluable to your home's foundation protection, wall staining from splashes, and the over flooding of your flowerbeds. To ensure the overall health and extended life of your gutters, here are a few easy tips to make sure you get the most out of your rain gutters.
Along with catching the run-off rain water from your roof, seamless gutter is great at catching the falling leaves of the fall. It is critical to your gutter's functionality that the leaves are regularly cleaned out of your gutters. Once every month or two months (especially during the fall), grab a ladder and check your gutters to see if they are clean. Overhead Door can furnish and install gutter guards for your house or just provide for pickup and self-installation. This guards are designed to allow water through, but block everything that could potentially clog your downspouts.
If your gutter ever begans to leak, do not fret just yet. You may be able to fix this by yourself without having to call a repair man. If the leak is caused by a small crack in the gutter, caulk will easily correct this. Caulk is an adhesive puddy that will seal small scale cracks perfectly. You can pick up caulk at any one of your local hardware stores.
Many homeowners that experience trouble opening or closing their garage doors with elecric motors called the operator, are often surprised at some of the reasons the door won't open or close. There can often be multiple explanations for this problem but two really stand out among the rest.
Before you call a repair man or the neighborhood handyman, first go to your garage and face your garage door from the inside. Then look at the bottom left and bottom right areas of the door. You should see a red light on one side and a green light on the other. These are the photocells of the garage door. They are part of the safety system of the door. If one light is blinking then an object is obstructing the laser beam that crosses the opening under the door, or the photocells are not aligned.
If the door will not close all the way down or raise all the way up, then your operator's limits are off. These "limits" are settings in the operator's circuit board that tell the motor when to stop the door up or down. If this is the case, consult your operator manual, the installing company should have left it with the door, to read on how to re-set the limits. If these steps do not help with your problem then call the experts here at Overhead Door Co. of Monroe and we'll be more than happy to ride out and take a look to see how we can help.
Most homeowners do not know that the noise pollution on their garage door can be easily and quickly fixed without having to call a service man. Generally, the majority of noise from garage doors comes from the springs and hardware such as the hinges. Neglected springs and harware can easily rust over causing strain to be put on the parts. This strain is the source of the grinding, grating, and "screechy" noise. The good news is this problem is easily preventable and easy to fix!
First off beware that the springs have an immense amount of tension on them at all times, especially when the door is in the down position, so be careful and be sure to not mess with any screws or bolts!! Next, apply oil to the springs and wipe it down real well with a rag. This ensure the oil gets in between the coils. Any oil will do, but we have found the best lubricant for these springs is motor oil. After you have lubricated the springs, take a light spray oil (WD-40 is perfect) and apply to the hinges and track (where the rollers are on the side of the door). Wipe away any excess oil on the hinges that might run down onto the door. Be sure to repeat these steps every 3-6 months! This will keep your door quiet and you happy!
